The phantom camera strikes again! Now including smoking(haha) colors, tuned-up cars from the eighties and three flying angels by the names of Heidi, Cisco and Bambi. Yeah, those really are the models’ names. Very nice film with a score to die for. Symphonic music and especially baroque and chorals seem to became quite hot recently. Probably cause they create a certain kind of grandeur most (fashion) films wouldn’t achieve with their imagery alone.

To sum up: a very successful mix of techniques and styling devices by director Daniel Askill. If you think you might have heard the name before, you’re probably right. Daniel has done lots of cool stuff in the past, but you probably know him best for inventive music videos like this one.

Carolyn Murphy has to be the coolest model ever for doing this. Either that or she was blackmailed into it…
For photography, Ryan & crew used the Phantom camera (capable of capturing video at over 1000 frames per second, same one used here and here). It’s another hit for Nowness and became an instant classic when released a few months back.

Created by AnOther Magazine with artist and filmmaker Baillie Walsh, KM3D-1 stars Kate Moss. The work continues Moss and Walsh’s journey into experimental, multi-dimensional image-making, first seen in their legendary holographic film for Alexander McQueen’s autumn/winter 2006 show.

With a performance that recalls the fantastical cinema of Ray Harryhausen, James Bidgood and Kenneth Anger, KM3D-1 places at its centre one of the most iconic female figures of the modern age. Suspended in time and space, Kate is caught inexorably in the parallax gap; a butterfly in a spider’s web.
Captured at 1,000 frames per second – a speed so slow that movement is almost imperceptible – the beauty of Kate’s face appears frozen, transforming her into an impenetrable deity. She is a figure of contemporary fantasy, shattering her own self-image.
Made with state-of-the-art Phantom cameras, specially built for the project to create extreme slow motion and a dramatic 3D effect, KM3D-1 reflects AnOther Magazine’s raison d’etre: to champion creatives pushing the limits of what seems possible.

Can’t watch Kate in 3D, because I haven’t got lenses, yet(!). Still an impressive piece of film. The director’s most known work is probably the epic music video for Massive Attack’s “Unfinished Sympathy” from 1991. Really, one of the great music videos of the 90s, it still gives me the creeps. If you watch it closely, Baillie already relied on the dramatic impact of slow motion in that one. Looks like something inbetween 30 and 40 frames per second. It’s a big leap to the 1000 he has used with KM3D-1, but the effect is the same: we get to explore what is normally hidden from the average human sense of time. I already featured a film shot on the Phantom camera on the blog a while back. Since Hollywood blockbusters like Inception, Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes etc, use the Phantom camera, it got a big push, especially in the commercial field. I’m eager to see, what still awaits us from extreme slow-motion regarding fashion film – besides beautiful women throwing back their hair and such…
While I can’t totally agree with the pr text above – guess I’m not a big enough fan of Kate(’s beauty) – the overall vibe I get from this film is quite cool. I admire the purity of the imagery and the minimalistic concept. Sound design is great, too.
Perfectly executed high budget thing.

“Formed in 2008, Legs is a full-service creative team of writers, directors and producers based out of MILK Studios in New York and Los Angeles. They create broad and artistic campaigns through creative collaboration in various media including film, video, photography, performance and installations. The core members of Legs are Adam Joseph, Georgie Greville, Greg Brunkalla and Geremy Jasper.”

“In “Dog Days Are Over”, directed by Georgie Greville and Geremy Jasper of LEGS, and edited by Paul Snyder at Lost Planet, Florence is the shamanic leader of a surreal orchestra where spiritual elation explodes into smokey psychedelic anarchy. Each musical element of the song is personified by a group of colorful characters that combine 60’s girl groups, Hinduism, gospel choirs, drum circles, paganism and pyrotechnics. Florence is a painted primal force of nature that whips a religious experience into a riot.”

I LOVE this. It is an incredible piece of pop art and a great example of crossing over between performance art, film (editing) and digital artistry. The icing on the cake is of course how crazy-good everything interacts and is executed.

“A subversive take on the casting process directed by Legs’ Georgie Greville, based on the Iggy Pop song ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog’. Georgie won the Samsung Grand Prix for this piece at Diane Pernet’s festival ‘A Shaded View on Fashion Film’.”

Not exactly a fashion film per se, still a very cool idea. You can tell the guys working on this have experience with film – their timing regarding staging, music and editing is quite perfect.

Maybe their most impressive piece is this little film they created as intro for their homepage. It’s not in use anymore, but i can remember how blown away I was, when I discovered LEGS and entered their site and was hit by a full-screen with floating bodies. It was shot with 1000 frames per second (yeah, THOUSAND) on the Phantom high speed camera.

You should visit their homepage, and they have a Vimeo account, too, if you’re only interested in seeing their films.
